Machine translation (MT): Not quite ready yet
We believe that translation is still better the old fashioned way. However, with the development of more and more computer assisted translation (CAT) tools – and the improvements being made to existing tools the profession is changing. These tools can help create more uniformity in a translation by ensuring that phrases are translated in just one way – and that no sentence is translated twice. They save time but, for some, may take away from the originality and freedom of translating the way we used to. Admittedly, CAT tools have come a long way in the 21st century. Having said that, there is no CAT tool, free or otherwise, capable of translating all by itself. For now, clients are stuck with humans if they want quality translations.
English: Short and Sweet
Fun fact: Did you know that documents translated into English from French or Spanish are about 10-15% shorter? There are a number of reasons why English is considered “the business language” and that my well be one of them! Despite attempts by some to suggest that Mandarin is on its way to becoming the global business language, evidence suggests that English will remain dominant in the foreseeable future. Recent articles in prominent business magazines including the Business Insider and Forbes continue to support this trend of thought…Go, English!
